NCCL parent Tim Clinch, who is also a musician and a Festival board member, will visit the school for ten sessions with each class, to discuss chamber music, instruments, composers, historical style periods, and how different aspects of chamber music shed light on various times and cultures. Festival Music Director Barbara Govatos, a Wilmington native who now plays violin with the Philadelphia Orchestra, will join Tim in several of these classes to add her perspective. Four additional professional musicians will also visit to demonstrate and discuss their instruments; their visits will be co-funded by the Music Performance Trust Fund, which is administered through Local 21 of the American Federation of Musicians. The residency will culminate in a one-hour performance, featuring music and composers studied during the weekly classes. For NCCL students, this will be an opportunity to have a great deal of enrichment in advance of the in-school performance, as well as a means of studying cultural material in a way which provides greater connection with their other studies. For the Festival, it will be an opportunity to learn more about what subjects, compositions, and learning styles make the most positive impressions on the students, to improve the effectiveness of future outreach programs.
The classes will begin in late October, and extend through January. Family members will be welcome at the January 22, 2001 in-school performance; watch the bulletin board for details!
