Art is a great way to increase an understanding of the world and see connections and solutions to problems in new ways. Goals of the art program include:
Seeing how art uses skills learned in other subjects like math, science, social studies, literature, history, and music. Connections are often made between art projects and what societies inspired them and how they relate to the real world. Also, skills in measuring, project planning, experimentation, pattern recognition, and construction are pulled from other subjects and put to practical use in art class. The social impact of art is also incorporated into art lessons.
Understanding various cultures and time periods and their expression through art.
Increasing skills with a variety of materials and techniques.
Helping children understand and develop their unique point of view through art making.
Building a student’s self-confidence by encouraging them to take risks, and to manage unexpected results.
When teaching, we're looking to help children in three areas of art:
Creative Expression. The student’s ability to have a point of view and express it in their work. It’s what makes each artist's work unique and recognizable as their own.
Mastery of art materials and techniques. Improving skills with different art materials while refining techniques using a variety of tools. Learning new ways to combine materials and how different processes achieve different effects.
Project management and workspace. Following steps to achieve a goal, using time well, keeping materials and workspace orderly and making good use of what’s available. Sharing when necessary and supporting fellow artists with constructive comments.
